You are not alone in the daily chaos...
Your child has more potential than their hardest days show. When regulation is under strain, executive function skills don’t work as they should, and even simple tasks can turn into power struggles. It’s not about willpower, laziness, or defiance, it’s a sign that something deeper needs support and skills need to be built. That’s where Cognitive Roots comes in.
The Foundation
Regulation. When emotions run high, even simple tasks can feel impossible. Kids and teens may get frustrated, upset, or overwhelmed over seemingly small things. Learning to understand and manage regulation is the first step, it sets the stage for everything else your child will learn.Â
Mental Workspace
Remembering and Focusing. Struggling to remember directions, follow steps, or keep track of what’s needed? Strengthening memory and focus gives kids and teens the tools to handle daily tasks and prepare for learning other important skills.
Real-Life Skills
Applied Executive Function Skills for Everyday Independence. Once emotions and focus are steady, kids and teens can approach their day with confidence and follow through on tasks and routines. Other executive functioning skills, like planning, prioritizing, managing time, and organizing, can then be taught and practiced to support independence.

Executive function skills are the mental tools that help us manage daily life and achieve goals. They develop gradually, starting in childhood and continuing into the mid-twenties.Â
When these skills are underdeveloped or under strain, even simple tasks can feel overwhelming. The good news: executive function skills can be taught, learned, and strengthened at any age. Addressing these deficits now prevents small struggles from turning into bigger challenges later.
Skills your child may be struggling with
These challenges are common, and they are not a reflection of effort or intelligence.

Forgetting instructions mid-task, losing track of steps, or needing constant reminders.
Planning and PrioritizingÂ
Struggling to break down tasks, complete steps in order, or decide what is most important.
Flexible Thinking
Getting stuck when plans change, having difficulty shifting between tasks or ideas.
Impulse Control
Acting or speaking before thinking, difficulty waiting, or struggling to pause before reacting.
Time Management
Underestimating how long things take, running late, or losing track of time during tasks.
Task Initiation
Knowing the task that is supposed to happen, but having difficulty starting the first step.
Organization
Constantly misplacing things, missing steps, and leaving spaces in disarray.
Attention and Focus
Difficulty filtering out distractions and staying locked in long enough to actually complete what they started.
Self-Monitoring
Trouble catching their own mistakes, reading the room, or course-correcting mid-task or mid-conversation.
About Cognitive Roots
Cognitive Roots was created to help kids, teens, and families build regulation, executive function skills, and lasting independence.
I’m Ashley, an Occupational Therapist with over eight years of experience supporting children and adolescents in homes, clinics, and schools. I have extensive training in executive function and sensory processing, which allows me to look at regulation through a deeper lens and understand what’s really driving daily challenges.
My approach is rooted in how the brain develops and how skills are built step by step, not just managed in the moment. At Cognitive Roots, helping kids and teens feel regulated and ready to learn comes first. From there, we build the executive function skills that support success at home, at school, and beyond.
The goal is skills that stick, increasing confidence, and independence that grows with them.
